Mobilization of the competent services of the Republic and an alarm at the American embassy in Nicosia on Wednesday morning after the detection of an unknown suspicious object near Lebanon heading towards Cyprus.

According to government sources, all necessary government protocols have been put into operation, which are activated even in the event of a suspected threat. F-16 fighter jets have taken off, while a section of the Nicosia FIR has been closed for the purposes of intercepting and investigating the unidentified object.

An alarm was also raised at around 9:30 in the morning at the American embassy in Nicosia. Embassy staff were taken to the basement as a precaution and the relevant security protocols were activated.

The alarm at the embassy ended shortly before 10:00 and the staff returned to their duties as normal, after the required procedures were completed.

In an adjacent English-language kindergarten, where children of embassy employees attend, the prescribed measures were also activated, with the children being taken to a shelter for precautionary reasons.

Moreover, the Cabinet meeting, which was scheduled for 9:30 in the morning, was postponed to 16:00, while at 12:00 the National Security Council was convened to assess the situation.

The competent authorities continue to investigate the nature of the unknown object.
