A 76-year-old man was arrested following cooperation between the Police and the German authorities, to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of internet fraud, extortion of money under false pretenses, and money laundering.
A statement from the Police Communications Branch states that "the 76-year-old was wanted by the authorities of the Republic, who issued a European arrest warrant against him, following information that emerged during the investigation by the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department into the online fraud case. The man was located in Germany on November 24 and arrested with the European warrant, while after a court proceeding, the German authorities approved the request for his extradition to Cyprus."
Members of the Larnaca TAE "traveled to Germany from where they accompanied the suspect by air to Larnaca airport yesterday, Thursday, January 30. Upon their arrival in Cyprus, they proceeded to arrest him with a court warrant."
It is noted that "the fraud was reported to the Police by a resident of Larnaca. According to his complaint, in August 2022, he purchased a tractor-type vehicle, worth 150 thousand euros, via the internet. After sending the money by wire transfer and never receiving the vehicle, he realized that he had been defrauded."
After examinations conducted by the Larnaca Medical Center, in collaboration with the German authorities, evidence emerged against the 76-year-old.
TAE Larnaca continues the exams.
