The new Immigration Policy and Asylum Policy will be presented at 11.15 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Nouris, at the Presidential Palace.
Dramatic changes are taking place on the issue of asylum applications, with new procedures established by the government, under the pressure of the thousands who remain in Cyprus and are unable to accept them.
The four bills of the Ministry of Interior were discussed in the Parliament yesterday, which shorten the time of examination of asylum applications by the courts, while more meticulous investigations are carried out to combat the phenomenon of virtual marriages.
Cyprus has become a systematic immigration destination for people who are either being persecuted because of their background and religion, or who are trying to leave war zones, such as Syria, or are in the process of finding better living conditions, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nikos. Nouris, speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Law.
Mr. Nouris announced that the government is proceeding with the construction of a new center, in the area of the former facilities of the Cereals Committee in Menogia, for hosting applicants until the examination of their application is completed.
The government has also agreed with Frontex to repatriate migrants to safer countries. Three flights have already taken place, repatriating people to their countries recently.
