The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is studying ways to utilize the technology of drones in the postal services, in the context of the continuous effort for upgrading and modernization of the services offered by the Cyprus Post.

In this context, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Giannis Karousos had today the opportunity to attend a drone pilot demonstration that took place under the European Program with the participation of six countries. As Mr. Karousos mentioned, the environment and the needs in the postal services are constantly changing due to the rapid technological development. Postal Services worldwide are now called upon to adapt the services they offer to the citizens, incorporating new technologies that make the service of the citizens better and faster.

In statements after the demonstration, referring to the annulment of the decision for autonomy of the Cyprus Post, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works pointed out that it was assessed that the Cyprus Post can be upgraded and reorganized as part of the Government. Technology and innovation, said Mr. Karousos, are an important part of this effort, emphasizing that the full digitalization of their services is already underway.

According to the Minister, in the framework of the strategy for the modernization of the Cypriot Post services and recognizing that drones are an important technological development, ways are being studied for their integration as a possible alternative or complementary method of handling postal activities in Cyprus, such as is the specialized delivery and provision of postal and other services in remote or hard-to-reach areas.

At the same time, the Department of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is examining the Regulations governing the use of drones at the national level, in order to update them where necessary, with the aim of harmonizing national legislation with the corresponding European one.
