The Police is faced with a new form of telephone fraud, after yesterday's complaints from citizens, that strangers tried to trick them and extort money from them through telephone communication. In fact, in one of the above cases, the perpetrators managed to extort a large amount of money from an 87-year-old woman.
According to the complaint of the 87-year-old resident of Larnaca, around 3 p.m. yesterday, she received a call on the landline of her apartment, from an unknown man, who falsely told her that he had kidnapped her daughter and husband and demanded €10,000 to release them. The stranger also told her that another person would go to her apartment to pick up the money.
The complainant was convinced by the words of the stranger and a little while later, an unknown person visited her in her apartment to collect the money. The 87-year-old woman allowed him to enter the apartment and showed him a small suitcase, in which the sum of €27,000 was kept. The stranger took the suitcase and left the apartment.
During yesterday's day, the Police in Larnaca received seven more complaints, where an unknown person tried to trick mainly elderly persons and extort sums of money from them, without however succeeding.
