An appeal to hunters who will venture into the countryside and forests with the start of the hunting season next Sunday, November 5, 2023, to be very careful during their outings and to completely avoid lighting fires in unauthorized areas, or throwing cigarette butts and lit matches, the Department of Forestry directs.
As stated in an announcement by the Department, "the risk of causing and spreading a fire, despite the fact that it is reduced due to rainfall, nevertheless remains very high".
It is recalled that in recent years fires have destroyed large areas both in forests and in the countryside, which were an important habitat for game and fauna in general, with serious effects on the natural environment.
It is also emphasized that the disposal of garbage and empty cartridges into the environment constitutes serious pollution and that this is also prohibited by the "Law on the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game". Therefore, hunters are urged not to litter and pick up empty cartridges.
The Forestry Department states that if anyone perceives smoke or fire, in or near the forest, to inform, without any delay, the nearest Forestry Station or to immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service), clarifying that it is for a free call.
