Online Hotel and Hospitality Business, employers, staff, TOURISM

Many promises that "we will notify you", entrepreneurs who broke their promise to meet their potential new employees for an interview, or even unpaid work on a "trial" basis, are some of the obstacles encountered by people with academic degrees. studies in the field of catering, in their effort to be employed in the field. Today, when the problem of not finding staff for work, including in the catering industry, is highlighted by the entrepreneurs themselves in the industry, politis.com.cy receives complaints from people who complain that, for various reasons and with different pretexts, found many obstacles and doors closed.

Trial and unpaid

The problem that is most frequent in the complaints of citizens, who, for obvious reasons, wish to remain anonymous, is that various employers had created false hopes, but in various ways they broke their promises. In several cases, the restaurant owners did not even show up for an interview appointment:

A man who received a promise that he would start working in a specific restaurant in Nicosia, was warned the previous day that, in the end, they would not proceed with his recruitment, without having been given a convincing excuse.
In another case, a person who worked for two days, on a trial basis, in a restaurant in Nicosia, at the request of the employer, submitted various documents for his recruitment, however, he was informed that he was not included in the plans. He was not paid, as he complains, for the two days he worked, even on a trial basis.
The third complaint concerns a person who had originally joined the restaurant kitchen team, which would soon be operational. Initially, he says, eight people were hired to "take out the dishes" on the menu, but when they completed their mission, four of them were informed that they would not continue working. The employer paid them in this case the accrued.
Another person complains that he was asked to work a week full time in a restaurant, on a trial basis. He would not be paid the accrual of the probationary period, even if he remained at work. Only if he submitted his resignation would he be paid for the hours he would work on a trial basis.
Another case concerns the management of a cafeteria, which had asked a prospective employee to work for four days without pay, for training purposes.
A person with a degree in cooking had gone to a restaurant for work, an appointment was arranged for an interview with the employer, who immediately asked the candidate what salary he was asking for. When he heard the amount of 850 euros, he replied to the candidate that "there is a lot for a cook".
"We will notify you"

According to the complaints collected by our website, there were also promises without response from employers who told prospective employees that they would be notified of their decision, but they are still waiting. Specifically, a person complained that he "waits" since 2013 to be notified by a specific restaurant. The same practice, according to his complaint, was applied by other catering companies over the years.

Another case concerns a person who agreed with a restaurant to start work at a specific time period, receiving the promise that he would receive a phone call about the exact start date of their collaboration. However, he complains that the phone call was never made.

Another complaint expressed on our website concerns the case of a prospective employee, who was invited to two appointments with the restaurant manager. The director, according to the complainant, expressed his satisfaction and desire to cooperate with the person in question, however when he traveled outside Cyprus, no one contacted the candidate, with the result that the cooperation did not proceed.

To the above is added a recent incident, which concerns a prospective employee in a restaurant, who had met with the director of the company on Friday and was promised that they would contact him, after consultation with the owners, to inform him his salary and start work on Monday. But, according to the complaint as expressed on politis.com.cy, this never happened.

"He fell asleep"…

One of the most bizarre excuses heard by a young man who complained that he was waiting for his boss for a job interview was that he "fell asleep". Another case in which the boss did not give signs of life, while he had a scheduled appointment with a prospective employee in his restaurant, was reported by another complainant.
