The latest developments in the Cyprus issue and Turkey's "bilateral" relations with the pseudo-state will be on the agenda of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during his visit to the occupied territories on January 8-9, Turkish media reports.
Citing sources of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish media report that Hakan Fidan will hold talks with "officials" of the pseudo-state "regarding the meeting that will be hosted by the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres in Switzerland in the coming months." The informal meeting is scheduled to take place in Switzerland with the participation of the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration of southern Cyprus (EDNK) Nikos Christodoulides, the leader of the tdvc Ersin Tatar, the mothers of the homelands and the third guarantor country Britain" as referred to in the Republic of Cyprus and the pseudo-state, respectively.
As they broadcast, "after a long break in solving the Cyprus problem, the year 2024 was an active year. On October 15, 2024, an informal dinner was held in New York hosted by the UN Secretary General with the participation of the president of the Tatar People's Party and the leader of the EDNK Christodoulidis. In the announcement made by the Office of the UN Representative after the dinner, referring to the work of the former Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, it was officially recorded that there is currently no common ground to start formal negotiations between of places on the island".
They also report that "recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides at the European Political Community Summit in Budapest. On November 7, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama also participated in the meeting."
Turkey's position on Cyprus
———————————–
According to the Turkish media "during the informal meeting of the 5+UN format held in Geneva on April 27-29, 2021, the Turkish Cypriot side, led by the president of the Turkish Cypriot Party Ersin Tatar, announced that it has withdrawn its support from the bi-communal model and bizonal federation and presented its vision for a solution to the Cyprus problem with two states".
"Within the vision of the two-state solution, which is fully supported by Turkey, it was emphasized that the negotiation processes based on federation that have been tried for half a century have so far failed to bring a solution to the island, that today there are essentially two separate states and two separate communities on the island and that the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots, which are inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriots, should first to be recorded by the international community in order to start official negotiations that will pave the way for finding a fair, permanent and sustainable solution of the Cypriot issue according to the realities of the island", as they state.
