Transport expert Loukas Dimitriou spoke on Radio Proto about the traffic problem in Cyprus.

Originally asked if the time change could give drivers a breather or if the problem would be transferred to other times, he said the problem of the morning rush hour is due to the fact that we coordinate our commutes in the morning when we go to work or where we take our children at school all together, "of course our roads cannot withstand this load and long delays are observed".

He went on to say, “One management solution is not to go to work all the time. Measures such as flexible working hours are a solution. But we need to see other measures like car sharing or even a service that collects people like minibuses."

Later speaking about the strengthening of public transport he said that we could do better lines for the buses such as faster and express but also bus lanes that make sense.

Asked about the possibility of creating a tram or metro in Cyprus, he said that "the creation of lanes for a possible tram, which needs a little attention, involves many commitments and a lot of costs, around 250 million. We should think about it."

For the subway he said that it does not seem very reasonable because we will have to reach a few billion. "Have we exhausted all other options to go into an investment of billions?"

He explained that telecommuting is one of the key measures we should adopt.
