The Committee against Avian Slaughter (CABS) and the Pro Biodiversity Foundation (SPA) speak of high levels of poaching and inadequate enforcement of the law, publishing the results of the Autumn Bird Protection Tour in Cyprus.
According to the announcement, 9 volunteers participated in the 28-week tour, while a total of 200 active wild bird trapping points were found and a total of 3.432 spearheads, 145 nets and 157 sound-imitating devices were confiscated. Also, 594 protected birds belonging to 26 different species were found trapped or killed.
According to CABS, these results are similar to those recorded in previous years and show that bird trapping in the autumn is still a serious and widespread problem.
It is added that "despite the dozens of complaints to the Thera Fund, the response was meager", while it is reported that the strength of the Cypriot Police Poaching Squad was reduced by half. During the organization, there was a much stricter enforcement by the British Base Police.
