Damage to the Holy Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, in the community of Kandou, Limassol District, caused by a fire that broke out in the morning and was extinguished by members of the community and the Fire Service. As it turned out, the cause was a lit candle.
As the official of the Press and Public Relations Office of the Fire Service, Koulla Mesaritou, told KYPE, the fire broke out around 10:00 and members of the Kyvidon and Agios Ioannis Limassol fire stations responded to put it out.
The fire in the temple, which was closed at the time of the fire, was noticed by members of the community, who tried to put it out with fire extinguishers, he added, confining it to the area of the Holy Table.
Final extinguishing and ventilation of the area were carried out by the members of the Fire Service, while subsequent examinations found that the fire started from a forgotten candle, which was on the Holy Altar and spread to the six wings.
Damages, according to Mrs. Mesaritou, were caused to ecclesiastical materials on and around the Holy Altar, as well as from smoke, in the church area.
"The fire did not spread anywhere else, it was limited to the area of the Holy Altar", he added.
