The Government's goal is for Cyprus to become energy independent and secure, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou, said on Wednesday evening.

According to an announcement by the Cyprus Institute (IKy), speaking at the open debate, under the title "Energy Happening in Cyprus", which was held at the initiative of the President of the Association of Friends of the Cyprus Institute, Dr. Petros Kareklas, the Minister of Trade made it clear that the issue of energy "is very high on the government's agenda".

During the discussion, all the developments surrounding the burning issue of energy, combined with government policy, were analyzed.

It is reported that the main speaker in the debate was the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, while the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism, Dr. Kyriakos Hatzigianni, and the Professor of Energy Policy at the Cyprus Institute, Dr. Theodoros Zachariadis.

The moderator of the discussion was the Honorary President of the IKy and Professor of the Energy Department of the Energy, Environment and Water Resources Research Center (EEWRC) of the Cyprus Institute, Kostas Papanikolas.

Welcoming the guests, the President of the Association of Friends of the Cyprus Institute, Dr. Petros Kareklas, emphasized that the aim of the Association is to support the great work of the IKy, which he said has acquired an important position in Cyprus and abroad.

The Vice-President of the Association, Soula Zavou, also mentioned the role of IKy, who pointed out that the Cyprus Institute continues to lead in research, both in technologies and in the formulation of energy policy.

Taking the floor, the President of the Cyprus Institute, Dr. Stavros Malas, made a special reference to the technologies for utilizing solar energy, which IKy has developed, inviting everyone to turn their attention to the sun.

"Because the sun," he explained, "has no EEZ, there are no political parties and it belongs equally to everyone."

The Honorary President of IKy, Professor Costas Papanikolas, stated that the climate crisis, which is plaguing the planet today, is the result of the deliberate but also thoughtless use of energy.

According to Mr. Papanikolas "if the energy problem is not solved first, then the issue of the climate crisis cannot be solved either".

Before the start of the debate, a minute's silence was observed in memory of Giannakis Ioannidis, who contributed to the creation of the Cyprus Institute and who passed away yesterday.
