The Larnaca District Court today issued an eight-day detention order against a 34-year-old man, to facilitate Police investigations into an ongoing case of illegal importation and possession of drugs, specifically cannabis weighing approximately 18 kilograms, which was found in a courier package at Larnaca airport.
He is being investigated for offenses related to conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal importation and possession of drugs with the aim of supplying them to other persons, as well as forgery and impersonation.
As announced by the Customs Department on Monday, May 19, an officer of the Department, after examining relevant documents, selected a courier company package for physical inspection. The package originated in the USA and arrived in Cyprus via Greece, declared to contain "men's trousers."
During the physical inspection of the package, "in the presence of a representative of the courier company, 30 airtight nylon packages containing green dry plant matter with a total gross weight of 18 kilograms were identified. The Hellenic Anti-Corruption Commission was immediately notified due to its jurisdiction and a member of the agency presented himself at the checkpoint where he determined that the contents were cannabis."
The package containing the drugs was seized by the Customs Department and handed over to the Hellenic Anti-Corruption Commission for further investigation of the case.
The announcement adds that following coordinated actions by the Customs Department and the National Anti-Money Laundering Agency, "yesterday, Tuesday, May 20, a 34-year-old man was arrested, who presented himself as a person other than his real identity and received the package."
The case is being investigated by the Larnaca Police Department.
