Helmet mandatory for cyclists from February 1 – The fines

From February 1, for cyclists and bicycle passengers, the regulation that determines the mandatory use of a protective helmet, in accordance with the Legislation.

The Police announces that on December 30, 2022, a notification of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles (C.D.P. 523/2022) was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic, regarding the approval of a specific type of protective helmet for cyclists or bicycle passengers.

According to the notice, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles has determined that the type of protective helmet for cyclists and bicycle passengers should comply with the CYS ΕΝ 1078:2012+A1 standard, be explicitly stated to be at least intended for cyclists and bear Declaration of Conformity marking: CE.

It is also determined that alternatively, for young children up to 14 years of age, the type of protective helmet for cyclists and bicycle passengers should comply with the CYS ΕΝ 1080:2013 standard and bear the Declaration of Conformity mark: CE.

According to the legislation, the obligation to use a protective helmet by cyclists and bicycle passengers exists from February 1, 2023. From February 1, the Police will carry out traffic checks, as well as reports of related violations, with the aim of implementing and observing the provisions of the Legislation on the use of protective helmets by cyclists and bicycle passengers.

If the offense is committed and convicted, the offender will be subject to a fine not exceeding five hundred euros (€500). The offense is regulated out of court with the amount of €50.
