Estimates of the damage caused by the cold in the Paphos district have been completed and according to the Agricultural Insurance Officer at the Paphos District Office of the Department of Agriculture, Kostas Neophytou, the damaged area covers 500 acres of potatoes.
Mr. Neophytou reported that the recording of the damage by the teams of the Department of Agriculture began on Monday morning in the Polis Chrysochous district, in eastern and western Paphos, as well as in the semi-mountainous Paphos, including the areas between the communities of Polemi and Stroumpio.
This, he continued, is an initial assessment of the damage in the Paphos district, mainly to potato plantations. Subsequently, he said, damage declaration announcements will be issued, urging people who suffered damage from adverse climatic phenomena to complete them within 15 days.
When asked about this, he said that in addition to the estimates for damage to potatoes, it will take 10-15 days to determine whether damage was caused to citrus fruits or bananas.
Most of the bananas have been harvested, so it is not expected that much damage has been done, Mr. Neophytou estimated. Essentially, the damage from the bitter cold concerns potatoes, he added, saying that the situation for the rest is being monitored.
The communities with the most potato plantations affected in the Paphos district are Mantria, Timi, Kouklia, Geroskipou, Anarita, Achelia, Agia Varvara, as well as Emba and Kissonerga with smaller plots, he concluded.
