There are more and more arrests related to the illegal sale and use of inhaled laughing gas. Ayia Napa and Protaras as well as other coastal cities are the ones where most sales are usually recorded.

They are usually sold at affordable prices for young tourists and locals and offer moments of "joy" to their users who often combine this inhaled gas with a drink.

A typical example is for this summer an 18-year-old from Britain for whom her vacation in Crete did not have a happy ending, since she has been hospitalized in a coma since July 12 due to the use of laughing gas.

The consequences

Inhaled substances affect the brain. When substances or fumes are inhaled through the nose or mouth, they cause permanent physical and mental damage.

They deprive the body of oxygen and cause the heart to beat irregularly and faster. People who use inhaled substances may lose their sense of smell, suffer from nausea, nosebleeds and have problems with the liver, lungs and kidneys.

Prolonged use leads to loss of muscle mass, tone and strength.

Inhaled substances make people who take them unable to walk, talk and think normally. Much of the damage is caused to brain tissue when toxic fumes are inhaled directly into the sinuses.

Inhaled substances can also kill someone by causing a heart attack or suffocation as the inhaled gases replace oxygen in the lungs and central nervous system. Someone taking inhaled substances may also react suddenly with great violence.
