Nestlé will remove 18.000 tons of sugar from its products by 2020

Supports EU action plans to improve food

Nestlé has pledged to remove at least 18.000 tonnes of sugar from its products in Europe by 2020. As a result, by 2020 Nestlé products in Europe will have an average of 5% less sugar than they do now.

According to a relevant announcement, Nestlé supports the action plans of the European Union and the Member States related to food improvement, while this commitment is part of a series of Nestlé global commitments that will be announced on March 7, 2017.

The company announced its commitment to reducing sugar during a European childhood obesity event in Malta. In a message, Marco Settembri, Nestlé Executive Vice President and Director of Europe, Middle East and North Africa, emphasized the importance of healthy eating: "When one in three children is overweight or obese, it is obvious that we need to do more to offer them healthier options and to help promote an active lifestyle ".

In recent years Nestlé has been investing in healthier and tastier products, removing sugar, salt and fat, while adding other nutrients such as whole grains. For the past three years, for example, Nestlé has removed 11.300 tonnes of sugar from products in Europe that did not meet its own strict dietary criteria.

It recently announced the release of Nesquik chocolate milk powder with only 3,4 grams of sugar per serving, compared to the basic recipe containing 10,6 grams of sugar. Nestlé also revealed that it has found a way to structure sugar in such a way that it leads to a significant reduction in sugar in confectionery products, but without affecting their natural taste.
