The leaders of the Hellenic Caucus have submitted a legislative initiative to Congress to permanently lift the arms embargo on Cyprus.
As noted, the aim is to eliminate restrictions and exclusions related to the provision of military assistance and the sale of defense equipment to the Republic of Cyprus.
The United States of America has proceeded to completely lift the embargo, which according to the current regime must be renewed on an annual basis.
This fact complicates longer-term armament planning. The specific legislative initiative aimed at permanently lifting the embargo is expected to pave the way for Cyprus to acquire American weapons systems, thus further strengthening defense ties between Washington and Nicosia.
