A resident of the city of Rawalpindi in Pakistan shot and killed his 16-year-old daughter because she refused to close her TikTok account, police announced today.
“The girl’s father asked him to close her TikTok account. When she refused, he killed her,” a police spokesman said. The alleged perpetrator has been arrested. According to police in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, the victim’s family tried, without success, “to present the murder as a suicide.”
Incidents of violence against women for their public behavior, including on social media, are common in Pakistan. Authorities have frequently blocked or threatened to block TikTok, accusing the social media platform of promoting “immoral behavior” through sexually explicit or LGBTQ+ content.
Earlier this year in Balochistan, a province in southwestern Pakistan where tribal law still applies in many non-urban areas, a man confessed to orchestrating the murder of his 14-year-old daughter because of videos she posted on TikTok that he considered to be "injuring his honor."
In June, a 17-year-old Pakistani influencer was murdered in her home by a man she had rejected. The victim, Sana Yousaf, had more than a million followers on social media, including TikTok, where she posted videos of her favorite coffees or beauty products and traditional clothing.
