The Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Yiannis Panagiotou appears optimistic, in relation to the issue of the renewal of the collective agreement in the construction industry, according to information transmitted by the Cyprus News Agency, and estimates that the imminent submission of the mediation proposal to the social partners in a meeting scheduled for next Friday will work as a catalyst.
According to the same information, Mr. Panagiotou expects that both sides will act with the seriousness and maturity that characterizes them over time, so that the collective agreement of the sector is renewed smoothly, and the labor rights of the workers are effectively guaranteed.
Furthermore, the Minister of Labour, pointing out the importance of the construction industry for the development of the Cypriot economy, considers it necessary to ensure smoothness and stability internally, in a period of external liquidity and uncertainty.
In a joint statement, on July 16, PEO, SEK and DEOK state that "the framework presented by the Minister of Labor orally, as it is, cannot be accepted by the labor side, since it does not provide direct solutions to the issues of the sector".
They also note that "in the time we are going through, and with the data they have in their hands so far, they can only recommend to the workers of the construction industry who will meet in General Assemblies on Thursday, July 25, 2024, that they decide to carry out a 24-hour warning strike".
