Yesterday's statements by Turkish leader Ersin Tatar are the same as those made by the Turkish side in recent times for two states, and this cannot be accepted, said the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Viktoros Papadopoulos.
In statements at the Presidential Palace and asked about yesterday's Tatar positions regarding the solution of two states and the integration of "the north", as he put it, in the EU, Mr. Papadopoulos indicated that Cyprus is a member of the EU, there is also provision for the solution of Cypriots, "and if Mr. Tatar and the Turkish side return to the negotiating table and a bizonal bicommunal federation solution is found based on the discussions we have had so far, with the contribution of the EU, the Turkish Cypriot community will enjoy all the benefits of the EU ».
Asked about UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy Maria Ángela Holguín Quellard's reference in her open letter to moving away from solutions that in the past created expectations but were not fulfilled, Mr Papadopoulos said Ms Holguin was clear.
"He was talking about the process, it has nothing to do with Mr. Tatar's statements. We will await Ms. Holguin's report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. What we take from her letter is that she is continuing her efforts and that she is looking for a sustainable solution for a common future. A common future and a sustainable solution do not go hand in hand with the two states that Mr. Tatar is asking for," he said.
Answering another question, Mr. Papadopoulos said that Ms. Holgin continues her efforts and that's what we want too.
"And the President of the Republic said that he will cooperate, as he cooperates constructively and with proposals, to make this mission" of Mrs. Holgin successful, he said.
Also answering a question, the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic said that there is full understanding and cordial cooperation with the Greek Government, with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, adding that the President of the Republic has regular communications with Mr. Mitsotakis and we are in complete agreement.
"The diplomatic efforts made by the President of the Republic, both those that can be seen and those that cannot be seen, are in the direction of activating the international factor, so that the Turkish side can return to the negotiating table for the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in Cran Montana,” he concluded.
