Last night in Larnaca, at the age of 78, the fighter for the Republic, historical figure of the Left, statesman and doctor, Doros Christodoulidis, died.
The deceased was born in Larnaca on March 28, 1946 and studied medicine in Moscow, specializing in cardiology.
With the manifestation of the treacherous coup in July 1974, he participated and organized the resistance against the coup plotters in Larnaca, while when the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place, he fought in Pentadaktylos.
He was elected MP three times with AKEL, serving a total of three terms from 1991 to 2006.
As a Member of Parliament, he was vice-chairman of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Institutions, Values and Commissioner for Administration. Furthermore, he was for many years head of the Parliament's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, third vice-president of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Family Affairs, as well as vice-president of the Political Group of the United European Left in the same organization.
In 2003 he was appointed by the House of Representatives as an observer in the European Parliament. He was a member of the European Parliament for a short period (May 1, 2004-July 19, 2004), from the day Cyprus joined the European Union until the assumption of the duties of the new MEPs elected in the first European elections in which Cyprus participated. He participated in the European United Left - North Green Left.
He was the President of EDON and the ALKI Larnaca football club.
In 2004 he publicly advocated the rejection of the Annan plan. At that time, Christodoulidis came into conflict with AKEL, from which he eventually left. He later joined the Citizens' Alliance where he was the chairman of the Larnaca provincial committee and a candidate for MEP.
He was married to the doctor Androula Christodoulidou nee Mavromoustakis and had two sons, a daughter and nine grandchildren.
