The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated the position that the resolution of the Cyprus problem is a priority of Greek foreign policy, but also that Athens insists on a solution based on a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation, within the framework of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, to the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacekeeping Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, during their meeting in Athens today.
As Greek diplomatic sources point out, the meeting took place in the wake of the UN Security Council's unanimous renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), for which Greece made diligent efforts, as an elected member of the Security Council.
For her part, Ms. DiCarlo stated that the Secretary-General is committed to the Cyprus issue and seeks to achieve tangible results. She thanked Greece for the constructive role it plays within the UN Security Council and informed Mr. Gerapetritis about the preparations for the upcoming informal five-party meeting.
