The conduct of investigations at two levels, an administrative investigation and an investigation into possible criminal offenses, was requested by Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis, following instructions from the Minister of Justice and Public Order Marios Hartsiotis, in relation to what took place during the protest last Sunday of the hunters on the Nicosia-Limassol highway, stating before the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs that the investigation is expected to be completed in a month.
The reactions of the Members of Parliament were strong regarding the chaos and inconvenience, as they reported, caused to drivers by this particular event with the closure of the highway, with the Chief of Police avoiding answering the series of questions of the Members of Parliament due to the conduct of the two investigations. The Members of Parliament also referred to the non-presence of the Minister of Justice in the Committee, despite being invited.
Mr. Arnaoutis suggested that the session be postponed due to the conduct of investigations into the matter, with AKEL MP Aristos Damianou stating that the Leader does not have the right to request that the Legal Affairs Committee not proceed with a parliamentary audit.
"In order not to prejudge any outcome of the two investigations, my suggestion is to postpone the discussion of the issue," said the Chief of Police.
The session eventually continued and, speaking to the Committee, Mr. Arnaoutis said that on Monday, the day after the protest, he requested and received a report of events from the Larnaca Police Chief "on what happened both before and during" the event.
He also mentioned that he raised the issue with the Minister of Justice and yesterday, with his instructions, "I proceeded and gave instructions to initiate an investigation at two levels."
Mr. Arnaoutis said that the first level is the conduct of an administrative investigation, which "will cover all the actions taken by the Police, both before and during the event."
He added that the second is to conduct an investigation into the commission of possible criminal offenses by any person during the event.
Committee Chairman Nikos Tornaritis said that a new session will be held on April 23 at 9.00:XNUMX a.m., to which the Minister of Justice will be invited to attend.
