Insidious calculations in the Eastern Mediterranean surround Cyprus, said the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahçeli, describing developments in the wider region during his speech to his party's parliamentary group.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's government partner linked Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean to the conflicts in Gaza, the situation in Lebanon, the tension in the Strait of Hormuz and developments in the South Caucasus, arguing that they are all "links in the same chain."
"The blood of the innocent being shed in Gaza, the smoke of the massacre rising in Lebanon, the tension holding the global economy hostage in the Strait of Hormuz, the insidious calculations in the Eastern Mediterranean surrounding Cyprus, and the new political balance in the South Caucasus are links in the same chain," he said.
Elsewhere in his speech, Bahçeli launched an attack on Israel, which he described as a "crisis-producing mechanism" and a "center of instability" in the region.
He also argued that Israel is "caring about vassal ambitions in the context of Cyprus," linking developments in the Cyprus issue to broader geopolitical rearrangements in the Eastern Mediterranean.
