Mr Syllouris told his interlocutors that Brexit could upset both Cypriots in Britain and the British people in Cyprus, and that an agreement was needed in the negotiations with the EU to safeguard their rights.
The Speaker of Parliament also stressed the importance of reaching an agreement on the other two issues of the first phase of the negotiations, that of the financial settlement of the divorce and the future borders in Ireland.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, Mr. Syllouris stressed that a settlement agreement could be reached more quickly if there was support from all, including the guarantor forces, towards the abolition of guarantees and the withdrawal of the occupying troops.
The Commonwealth pointed out the initiative of Cyprus to discuss in more detail in the near future the Commonwealth-EU relationship in the perspective of Brexit.
In the meantime, Mr. Syllouris was received by the Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, Gregory, with whom he discussed issues of the parish and the Church, as well as the role that the Church can play in confirming the presence of some Cypriots in Britain if necessary. because of Brexit.
Monday's meetings continue with officials from the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization.
