The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, explained during his participation in the dinner held on Wednesday, in Brussels, in the context of the EU-Egypt Summit, that "Cyprus does not seek political mediation, but operational support for the plan, in a way that contributes to the viability of Gaza and at the same time respects Israel's security concerns", according to a written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Victor Papadopoulos.
Mr. Papadopoulos reports that at the dinner, the President outlined to the leaders of the EU member states and the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, his proposed six-point plan, based on the Trump plan for Gaza. He also referred to the importance of the new EU Pact for the Mediterranean, while praising the role of Egypt.
He also notes that "during a working dinner in the context of the historic first EU-Egypt Summit in Brussels" the President of the Republic referred to the role that Cyprus can play in the implementation of the US President's peace plan.
He adds that in this direction, "the Republic of Cyprus has proposed an applied contribution model that has already been codified in six operational pillars, building on the successful implementation of the 'Amaltheia' Plan, which operates through a bilateral security mechanism and in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates and UNOPS."
The President made special reference to the importance of the Pact for the Mediterranean, which constitutes the EU's new strategy for the Southern Neighbourhood region. It is noted that its official approval took place on 16 October 2025 at the level of the College of Commissioners, thus inaugurating a cooperation framework that is not limited to aid or development programs, but seeks to upgrade the Mediterranean into an area of strategic coupling between Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
"The implementation of the Pact and the upgrading of the EU's relations with the countries of the Southern Neighborhood, including Egypt, will be a major priority of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU," Mr. Papadopoulos points out in his statement.
It also states that the President of the Republic "praised the crucial stabilizing role of Egypt in the entire effort for peace in Gaza and more broadly in the Middle East" and "pointed out that the EU should support Egypt's macroeconomic stability, in coordination with the International Monetary Fund, taking into account the Union's strategic interests."
