The Candidate for Democracy Achilleas Dimitriadis commented on Fuat Oktai's announcements for the settlement of the occupied Deryneia area.

Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay announced that the Turkish state construction company TOKI will soon start social housing projects in the occupied part of Deryneia near Varosi.
Since June 2020, Turkey has announced that it will open Varosi and is advancing its plans step by step. Opened a section, followed by public spaces and beaches. Now he is proceeding with the Turkish state construction company TOKI to build the occupied area of Deryneia.
This development was predictable, and I emphasize this in my constant interventions.
What did those responsible for the management of the Cyprus issue do in recent years? They are silent. They neither predicted nor organized efforts to prevent
the worst.
I remind you that the then Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis said at the beginning that they were fireworks. At one point the president of DISY Averof Neophytou spoke of a "tsunami", but then he was silent and the former negotiator now tells us that UNFICYP should take control of Varosi as part of the dead zone. When Varosi opened, President Anastasiades announced measures, such as an appeal to the Security Council and a new Interstate Appeal to the ECtHR.
Can they tell us today, what did they actually do?
Varosi is the beacon of the solution and Cyprus is falling on the rocks of partition. President Anastasiades managed to alienate everyone from the Cyprus problem and those around him kept silent. Today the United Nations assigns us equal responsibility with Ersin Tatar.
In the February elections we should send a message to those who, with their inaction and unreliability, have left us in the worst position since the invasion.
Cyprus needs a new leadership to regain its credibility.
We will not sit and watch the cementing of Varosios and Deryneia.
We can stop the descent. That is why I propose that we break the impasse in the Cyprus issue and with the two keys – energy and the Euro-Turkish relationship – join the EU because this is our shield.
