The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are in Beirut for an official visit on immigration.
As reported by the National News Agency of Lebanon, President Christodoulidis and the President of the European Commission arrived in Lebanon for an official visit to hold talks with Lebanese officials "on the issue of those displaced from Syria".
In Beirut, they were received by the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, and according to official announcements, they would have a one-on-one tripartite meeting, followed by extended talks by the delegations of the three parties.
Government Spokesman Constantinos Letympiotis has stated in a written statement that the main objective of the visit will be the provision of political and financial support to Lebanon from the EU side, the discussion of addressing the challenges faced by the country as a result of regional developments, the effective management of immigration as well as the implementation of the necessary reforms by Lebanon to promote the country's stability and prosperity.
"The President of the European Commission will present an Economic Support Package for Lebanon, the implementation of which was an initiative of President Christodoulides and the Republic of Cyprus and is practical proof of the active role that the EU can play in the region," he noted.
Statements will then be made to the media.
Afterwards, the President of the Republic and the President of the Commission will go to the Parliament, where they will have a meeting with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nahib Berri.
