The Ministry of Health's proposal regarding the bill for recovery and rehabilitation centers was approved by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, according to Health Minister Michalis Damianos.
In his statements after the session of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace, the Minister of Health said that this bill covers "an important legislative gap and ensures the provision of high-quality recovery and rehabilitation services to patients and people with disabilities, while promoting social their integration and reintegration".
With the new provisions, he noted, compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is ensured, full and equal access to recovery and rehabilitation services is offered, including access to assistive devices and technologies. At the same time, he added, the requirements for the safe and standards-compliant operation of the centers are regulated, setting conditions for the groups of health professionals and scientific guidance.
"Furthermore, the establishment of new structures in the Ministry of Health with the appointment of a Superintendent of Recovery and Rehabilitation Centers and the establishment of an advisory committee will strengthen the oversight and implementation of the provisions of the law, ensuring the integrity and transparency of the licensing and control process," he said. Mr. Damianos.
He noted that the bill will be immediately submitted to the House of Representatives for a vote "and with its adoption, we expect to ensure the continued improvement of the quality of life of our citizens, with an emphasis on equal access to necessary health services."
Asked by a journalist if the elderly shelters will be included in the rehabilitation and recovery centers, the Minister said that there are transitional provisions in the bill regarding the way in which a shelter which is currently licensed by the Deputy Ministry of Welfare, through some procedures in which they will have to proceed and some evidence that he will have to submit, including having the staff he needs to provide rehabilitation services, he will thus be able to be licensed under these transitional provisions.
