A campaign to promote and support aquaculture in the EU, i.e. the cultivation of fish, shellfish and seaweed, is being launched on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, with a special event in Brussels in which competent Ministers from member states, European officials and representatives of the sector will participate.
According to its announcement, the Commission believes that by increasing aquaculture production in the EU, Europe's dependence on food imports can be reduced and local economies can be strengthened.
The campaign will focus on highlighting the dedication and commitment of aquaculture producers to sustainable practices and ensuring products meet strict EU standards.
The event will also be attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, the Polish Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jacek Czerniak, Paulo Do Nascimento Cabral, Member of the PECH Committee of the European Parliament, Piotr Całbecki, Chair of the NAT Commission of the European Committee of the Regions, Piroska Kállay, Chair of the Standing Group on Sustainable Food Systems of the European Economic and Social Committee, and producers.
