Against the backdrop of the recent devastating fires and the controversial issue of multiple pensions for state officials, the House of Representatives is holding an extraordinary session today, on two fronts.
With a multitude of guests from Ministries and competent services, the Parliamentary Committees for the Interior, Agriculture, and Natural Resources and Environment are meeting jointly, with the main topic being the consequences of the recent devastating fires, prevention and restoration measures.
A total of 79 guests were invited to attend the Parliamentary Committee meeting, including the Ministers of Interior, Agriculture, Defense and Justice, as well as the Deputy Minister of Innovation.
Also the General Directors of the co-responsible Ministries, the Civil Defense Commander, the Chief of Police, the Chief Fire Officer and the Commander of EMAK.
The meeting will also be attended by representatives of the local authorities of Limassol and Paphos, environmental and agricultural organizations, as well as the Commissioners for the Environment, Development of Mountainous Communities and the Citizen.
Specifically, the Committee will discuss the adequate staffing, equipment and means available to the competent services for the prevention and extinguishing of fires, while the need for immediate compensation and support for farmers and livestock breeders affected by the recent fires will also be examined. All this in light of the reports of the competent departments that were responsible for the timely extinguishing of the fire, which were made public yesterday.
At the same time, the destructive effects of fires on the natural environment and the need to increase funds for reforestation will be discussed, as well as the fire prevention planning of the Department of Forests and the preventive measures taken to protect the forests.
The Commission will also examine the environmental impacts of the operation of illegal landfills and the measures taken by the competent authorities to address them.
