The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, will inform the European leaders about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, in the context of the European Council in Brussels today, Thursday.
As the Government Spokesman Constantinos Letympiotis stated in a written statement, the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis went to Brussels yesterday afternoon to participate in the work of the European Council.
President Christodoulidis will participate in the established European People's Party (EPP) meeting this morning, during which he will inform the EPP members about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.
Subsequently, the President of the Republic will take part in an extended meeting, in which the leaders of 10 member states will participate, with the sole topic of discussion being Immigration.
The meeting, which will take place at the Office of the Italian Permanent Representation to the European Council, will be attended by President Christodoulidis, the Prime Ministers of Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Malta, Hungary, the Federal Chancellor of Austria and the President of the European Commission.
The aim of the meeting will be to coordinate and promote a common position on migration, and especially in terms of the external dimension, exploring innovative solutions that can be considered, strengthening partnerships with transit-origin countries, but also the issue of creating conditions of decent and of voluntary returns of Syrians in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in light of the spread of the crisis in Lebanon.
After the entire meeting, President Christodoulidis will participate in the work of the European Council where he will inform the European leaders about the outcome of the joint meeting he held with the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres and Ersin Tatar and the upcoming convening of an enlarged meeting that will convened by the Secretary General, in the context of investigating the prospects for the resumption of negotiations. The work of the Synod will be concerned with the developments in the Middle East.
President Christodoulidis will brief the leaders on the work and results of the MED9 Summit hosted by Cyprus on October 11, as reflected in the Paphos Declaration, and in particular on the contribution of the King of Jordan to the Summit.
"Within this context, the President of the Republic will highlight once again the constructive role that Jordan and Egypt play in the region, while he will convey a message of support to Lebanon, at a time when everyone's efforts are focused on avoiding further escalation of the tension" says the Spokesperson.
On the sidelines of the Synod, the President of the Republic will have private meetings with his European counterparts.
The work of the session will also concern Migration, the situation in Ukraine and Competitiveness, while external relations will be discussed during a working dinner.
In Brussels, the President of the Republic is accompanied by the Government Representative Konstantinos Letympiotis and the Head of European Affairs of the Diplomatic Office of the President Nektarios Sotiriou.
