The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed on Friday the EU's support for the efforts to restart peace talks for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, noting that the meeting in New York is a "positive development".

In her statements in the context of the opening ceremony of the Hemodialysis Unit at Paphos General Hospital, Mrs. von der Leyen, referring to the meeting next week between President Nikos Christodoulidis and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in New York in the presence of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres noted "we welcome this positive development".

"The European Union continues to fully support your efforts to resume peace talks for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue," he said. This, he continued, should be done "within the framework of the UN on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, and should be in accordance with all relevant Security Council resolutions, as well as in accordance with the principles on which the EU is based ».

Ms von der Leyen also said the EU was ready "to support all stages of the UN-led process with appropriate means".
