The Cabinet decided on Wednesday to strengthen the National Guard Special Forces through the allocation of points to those coming from the National Guard Special Forces, commandos, Special Operations Commandos and military police, as well as border guards who are trained and whose contracts with the Police have expired, as stated by the Minister of Justice Konstantinos Fytiris, after the body's meeting at the Presidential Palace.
Mr. Fytiris said that today the Council of Ministers decided, as for the reinforcement of the Mechanized Immediate Action Unit (MMAD), recognizing its contribution to the fight against crime, to assign to it those who come from the Special Forces of the National Guard, commandos, OUK and military police, as well as border guards who are trained by the Police and whose contract with the Police has expired.
A statement from the Ministry of Justice states that this is a decision to reorganize and strengthen the MMAD.
"The decision is part of the overall strengthening of the operational readiness of the Police, aiming at a faster and more effective response to high-risk incidents and enhancing citizens' sense of security," it is noted.
Specifically, it is added, the decision provides for the reorganization of the MMAD with a modern operational structure and unified coordination, the establishment of specialized criteria for staffing the Unit, with the aim of selecting personnel with high operational readiness, the possibility of hiring Special Police Officers exclusively for the MMAD, with increased qualifications, the creation of MMAD teams in each province, in order to strengthen the immediate response at the local level and the strengthening of the overall strength of the Unit, so that it meets modern operational requirements.
"The need to upgrade the NMSD arises from the increased and more complex security environment, which requires speed, flexibility and specialized response to critical situations," it states.
With the approval of the proposal, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order is proceeding with the establishment of a legislative committee to prepare the required legislative framework, in order to ensure the full implementation of the decision, based on the principles of meritocracy and constitutional order, the announcement concludes.
