There is a serious issue with shortages of medical and nursing staff at the Famagusta General Hospital, said George Perdikis, President of the Environmentalists Movement - Citizens' Cooperation, today after a delegation of the Movement visited the Famagusta General Hospital and met with the head of the Nephrology Department.

Mr. Perdikis reported to KYPE that "we noticed the technological upgrade and the improvement that exists in this particular Hospital". Today, he said, "there is a very significant improvement in technological upgrading and improvement, compared to the previous years before the coronavirus period, which was a difficult period for the Referral Hospital."

He added that "there is a serious issue with the shortage of doctors and nurses in the Hospital's Hemodialysis Department. At the moment there is only one doctor, who moved partially to Larnaca" and he noted that "at least one more doctor is needed for the specific Department. Patients complain about the fact that there is not a second full-time doctor in order to be properly served."

In response to a related question, Mr. Perdikis said that "kidney patients themselves face certain problems regarding their transfer to the Hemodialysis Unit". In general, "the Hospital needs support with doctors and especially with nursing staff", he said.

He also expressed "astonishment at the technological upgrade, with the new machines and the comfort that exists in the Hemodialysis Department of the Famagusta Hospital. This is also due to the intense pressure exerted by the late Giorgos Kezos, President of the Association of Renal Patients of Famagusta, who persistently requested the technological upgrade of the specific Department".

Mr. Perdikis also mentioned that during the visit to the General Hospital of Famagusta, the delegation of the Environmental Movement - Citizens' Cooperation "met with the Director and the Scientific Director of the Hospital, while being guided around the wards and various Departments".
