The Cyprus issue was among the topics discussed at the two-hour meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey in Athens. Giorgos Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan reiterated in their statements the two countries' positions on the Cyprus issue, with the Turkish Foreign Minister, however, making no direct reference to a two-state solution.
"Greece's positions on the Cyprus issue are known. We support a solution within the framework of the Security Council resolutions on the basis of the Bi-communal Bizonal Federation. We hope that the recent informal meeting in New York will create the conditions for the resumption of dialogue", said Mr. Gerapetritis.
On his part, Mr. Fidan stressed that Turkey's stance is clear and firm. "It has been proven over time that the federation model is no longer applicable on the island. A new spirit is needed to ensure the safety, freedom and well-being of both Turks and Greeks on the island, underlined the Turkish Foreign Minister.
