New York will be the center of proceedings for the Cyprus issue next month, culminating in the resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force by the UN Security Council before the end of January.
The reports of the UN Secretary-General on his Good Offices and the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) are expected to be released next week, the press representative of the United Nations in Cyprus, Alim Siddique, told CYPE.
He mentioned that on January 6, the UN Special Representative in Cyprus and head of the peacekeeping force on the island, Colin Stewart, is going to New York where on January 14 he will inform the United Nations Security Council.
On January 16, he will brief the troop-contributing countries to UNFICYP and then return to Cyprus.
The UN Security Council is expected to renew the mandate before the end of January, Mr. Siddique.
In the meantime, according to information from the KYPE, the negotiators of the two sides, Menelaos Menelaus and Gunes Onar, will possibly meet again after Epiphany to continue their discussions.
