Evidently moved, Nikos Christodoulidis officially took over the reins of the country.
"I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the honor you have done me.
You elevated me to the highest office of the Republic of Cyprus, I am grateful to you for your love and trust.
I'm mentally shaking all of your hands tonight. I look you in the eyes.. and with all sincerity I make you a promise tonight: I will do everything to be worthy of your trust."
He especially thanked his family, his wife, his children, all the members of his family in Cyprus and the USA who have been his support all these months, as he said.
"In the Cyprus that I envision, ours and the others do not exist. In the Cyprus that I envision, I will be the President of all Cypriots", he said.
"I respect and honor AKEL, its people... I also send my unlimited respect to Andreas Mavroyiannis for the good fight we fought", said Mr. Christodoulidis.
He continued by saying that "I want to refer specifically to DISY.. to its President, its leadership and its people. During this campaign we experienced difficult times on a personal and political level. I want everyone to know that I will not let them down. I spoke with Averof Neofytou, I accepted his congratulations and I will seek to meet him as soon as possible," he said.
He then thanked President Anastasiades for the trust and cooperation they have had all this time. "I will do everything to break the deadlock, to restart the dialogue and to create the conditions for a solution to the Cyprus issue," he noted.
