Following the recommendation of the Legal Service regarding possible unconstitutional provisions, the President of the Republic, as the guardian of the Constitution, reported to the Supreme Constitutional Court the amending Law of the Independent Social Support Agency, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymiotis states in a written statement, adding that "the Supreme The Constitutional Court will rule and its decision will be fully respected."
The decision of the President of the Republic to refer to the Law, according to Mr. Letympiotis, "is based on the obligation and responsibility that derive from his position, in cases where there are provisions that touch on compatibility with the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the Republic and no law may in any way be contrary or inconsistent with any of its provisions or with any obligation imposed on the Republic".
The Government Spokesperson states that "the attempt to politicize an issue that touches the Constitution causes a particularly negative impression, especially when it is done by invoking transparency and accountability, which are guaranteed anyway, since the list of donors is shared both with the Audit Service and in the House of Representatives".
"And the deliberate reference to 'Fund of the President's wife' is insulting," he underlines.
It also states that the Fund is managed by the Accountant General of the Republic and all accounts are submitted to the Auditor General and Parliament with full transparency.
According to Mr. Letympiotis, the wife of the respective President of the Republic presides over the Agency, which was established in 2014, like other charitable organizations, in the context of the social action it develops.
"It is at least impressive the operation of distorting the real facts, as well as the reaction to the mention of possible unconstitutional provisions, despite the fact that most of them have already been raised during the debate in the competent committee of the House of Representatives", he concludes.
