At a technocratic level, the European Union will be in Geneva for the Informal Enlarged Meeting on the Cyprus issue, clarified on Monday afternoon the Commission's spokesman for cohesion and reforms, Maciej Berestecki, in response to a question in the context of the midday press briefing.
"The Commission and the European Union support the United Nations-led process and the meeting taking place in Geneva today and tomorrow, and will be present in Geneva at a technocratic level," the Commission spokesperson said.
It is recalled that last Wednesday, President Christodoulides had referred, in the context of a cross-channel interview, to a request, which the Commission forwarded to the United Nations, to be present at Geneva, while he spoke of the possible presence of a Commissioner.
According to information provided by CNA from diplomatic sources, this request may have concerned the Vice-President of the Commission for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto.
On Thursday, in response to a question from CNA, Mr. Berestetsky had confirmed “that the EU will be represented at the summit,” without specifying at what level this would be. “We have no more information that I can share at this stage,” the spokesman had said.
