It is necessary to implement targeted improvement projects in the Prisons until their relocation, in order to ensure their smooth operation, enhance security and improve the living conditions of convicts, said the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fytiris, on Tuesday, in the context of a meeting he had on Tuesday with the Directors and staff of the Department of Public Works, the Electromechanical Service and the Directorate of Central Prisons.

According to a Ministry announcement, clear implementation schedules were set during the meeting, with the aim of completing the projects within three to six months at the latest, and the Minister gave instructions for continuous monitoring of the progress of the projects' implementation, in order to ensure that the work is progressing as agreed.

The announcement notes that during the meeting, which was held with the aim of coordinating and accelerating improvement projects in existing prisons, the Minister informed that the prison expansion plan has been canceled, as space has been found for the construction of new prisons.

At the same time, he emphasized that until the relocation, it is necessary to implement targeted improvement projects, in order to ensure smooth operation, enhance security and improve the living conditions of the convicts.

The planned projects include, among others, the renovation of the clinics, the creation of a new entrance exclusively for prison staff, the construction of a new clothing warehouse, the creation of a new clinic in the Open Prisons, the construction of a new laundry area for the needs of prisoners, as well as the implementation of a system to prevent the use of mobile phones, according to the announcement.

At the same time, the procurement and utilization of an electronic surveillance system has already been initiated, with the relevant order having been completed and the delivery of the equipment expected from the contracting company, in order to expand the possibilities of conditional release of convicts, with full assurance of public safety.

The Minister reiterated his will for close cooperation with all competent services, with the aim of timely completion of interventions and ensuring substantial and measurable results, the announcement concludes.
