Cypriot and internal governance were discussed in a meeting they had at the Presidential Office, the President of the Republic and the Speaker of the Parliament and President of DISY Annita Dimitriou, who stated that in the morning she sent to her counterparts in the Parliaments of the EU member countries as well as to the presidents of EPP, letter informing about the developments around Varosi. He calls them, he declared, "to defend law and legitimacy.
Mrs. Dimitriou added that she was informed about the actions and steps taken by the Republic of Cyprus after that and what concerns the properties in the fenced area of Famagusta, but she also informed about the actions of the Parliament and her party regarding the same theme. "We agree on the goal of restarting negotiations, mobility, taking advantage of every step and opportunity not only for information, but also for taking specific actions," he said.
President Christodoulidis, Mrs. Dimitriou reported, informed her about the meetings he had recently and what actions are being initiated. "It is important to realize that we all have a responsibility both as political forces, but also as individuals, to serve the goal of restarting the negotiations. This is also the essence of our own initiatives", he added.
He further stated that internal governance issues were also discussed, such as bills that are about to be tabled in Parliament, "but also some manipulations for which we have submitted our own opinion".
In response to a journalist's remark that DISY has declared opposition, but the Parliament will also need votes from the Alarm to pass some of the government's bills, Mrs. Dimitriou said that this debate has ended and they want to continue their work and course without interruption as a party. "We submit political positions and we remain a responsible political party. I think you have already established that where we agree we say so, where we disagree we say so and come out more forcefully through our own documentation and argumentation. And so we will continue."
The balances and debates in the Parliament, he continued, "also belong to the government itself. This bet, a venture that was also in the previous government, appears now. That's why there needs to be dialogue, communication in order to be able to compare not only opinions, but to have the necessary information." So that they can, he added, file their positions on time. They are also judged by the world, he continued, saying that they have principled positions that do not change in the economy, the Cyprus issue, social policy, etc. "We see our role as very essential, especially at this time with all that we have to manage."
Asked if they will approve bills if they are satisfied, Annita Dimitriou replied that this is what all MPs do and when asked to say which bills she considers as such, she mentioned the abolition of fuel taxation, where DISY - she said - tabled an amendment that was adopted unanimously. He also referred to upcoming bills, such as "around the issue of sanctions." We will see and examine all this on the basis of principles alone, concluded the President of DISY.
