Cyprus and Egypt have built a close and sincere partnership driven by their mutual desire to achieve regional stability, Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas said on Monday night in Nicosia, speaking at an event for Egypt's Armed Forces Day.
In his speech he noted that in today's rapidly evolving environment, particularly in the fragile Eastern Mediterranean region, the role of the Armed Forces becomes even more important. Today, he said, guided by our mutual desire to achieve regional stability, security and peace and to effectively address common challenges, Cyprus and Egypt have built a close and sincere cooperation in the fields of defense and security.
In this context, Mr. Palmas added, we have agreed a bilateral cooperation program as well as a tripartite mechanism with Greece, in the framework of which joint exercises and training are conducted, for the benefit of our Armed Forces and he referred to the "BRIGHT STAR" exercises. "MEDUSA" and "ARGONAUTIS".
Noting that Cyprus and Egypt remain united and steadfast in our commitment to protect our citizens and contribute to the return of stability, security and peace to the region, he said the Gaza crisis has escalated into a wider conflict with huge consequences.
He stressed that "the Republic of Cyprus wishes to end the cycle of violence and establish peace and security in the region", adding that "we reiterate our position that further escalation must be avoided. We call for a political solution based on two states, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, this is the only way to create conditions of peace and stability in the region and ensure the security of both Israelis and Palestinians."
Peace and prosperity in the region can only be achieved with mutual respect and understanding, he stressed.
Mr. Palmas said that "recognizing the importance of maintaining constructive relations with all countries, including our neighbors, I would like to emphasize that our military cooperation is not a challenge to anyone."
"Peaceful coexistence is not only a goal but also a necessity in today's world. Collective security is enhanced and strengthened when we seek understanding, dialogue and cooperation, rather than confrontation and conflict," he said.
In conclusion, he noted that this anniversary reminds us that together, we can build a more hopeful future for our peoples and for the Eastern Mediterranean.
