Letymiotis: A few non-residents have resorted to the "real estate committee"

The number of Greek Cypriots who have sought refuge in the "real estate committee" in the occupied territories is extremely small and even fewer are the applications that have been examined and approved, said the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymiotis, in response to a question on Friday during a press briefing at the Presidential Palace Mansion.

Asked about the announcements from the occupied property for compensation by the applicant "committee", for a case concerning occupied property which had previously been adjudicated by the ECtHR and invited to comment on whether there is a risk of closing cases monitored by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Spokesperson said that the issue at the Council of Europe is one for which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is regularly and consistently in contact but also takes the necessary actions.

"We do not think that this risk exists. Of course, constantly, however, it is an effort in which we want to communicate, but also to intensify our efforts even more, precisely because the decisions of the Council of Europe - and we also recently saw the decisions on Varosi - are decisions that we consider to send the right messages", he said.

Regarding this specific case, Mr. Letymiotis said that the information that the Government has and from the information that has seen the light of day regarding the effectiveness of this "committee" is that an "infinitely small number" of Greek Cypriots have taken refuge in this " committee" and "even more minimal is the number of applications that have been approved or examined".

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is meeting on September 17-19, and will examine, among other things, the implementation of the decisions of the ECHR by Turkey concerning illegal properties in the occupied territories.
