A circular is expected to be issued today, Monday, by the Minister of Education of Greece for the celebration in Greek schools of the anniversary of April 1 and the start of the 1955-59 national liberation struggle, according to the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athena Michaelidou.
In statements to the media after the Council of Ministers meeting and when asked to comment on this decision of the Greek Government, Ms. Michaelidou noted that "it was an issue that we raised from the beginning of our governance."
“We believe that the purest struggle, of 1955-59, is very right to be honored in Greek schools because of its nature,” he said. “We achieved this this year,” he said, both because of the 70th anniversary and because of the assumption of duties by Greece’s new Minister of Education.
"We are particularly satisfied and moved by this decision," said Ms. Michaelidou. She noted that the Ministry of Education, following the request of the Cypriot Government, has also prepared educational material, which will be sent to Greece for use by teachers in both primary and secondary education.
Asked if a decree is expected, she said that “the circular is being issued today by the Minister of Education of Greece.” “This is the first time this has happened, and we thank you for satisfying our request,” said Ms. Michaelidou.
