The law proposal that will give judges the right to order the chemical castration of child rapists and also to impose sentences of up to life imprisonment for offenses involving the rape of minors, was requested from the Parliament by the MP of Famagusta DIPA, Michalis Giakoumi.
In his letter, Mr. Giakoumi states "With this letter, I wish to bring to your attention the need for stricter legislation regarding the crimes of sexual abuse of minors. The recent shocking case in Limassol, where a father was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the rape of his 11-year-old foster daughter, demonstrates the weaknesses of the current legislative framework and the need for more drastic measures. Specifically, I propose the preparation of a law proposal that provides for the following:
1. Chemical Castration: The imposition of the measure of chemical castration on those convicted of sexual abuse of minors as a measure of prevention and protection of society.
2. Life Imprisonment: The imposition of life imprisonment for any person convicted of sexual abuse of a minor without the possibility of parole or early parole.
These proposals are based on the need for stricter and more deterrent measures to protect our children and ensure that the perpetrators of such heinous crimes are punished with the severity they deserve. Strengthening the legal framework will help create a safer environment for children and send a strong message that our society will not tolerate any form of sexual abuse of minors. Please take my proposal into consideration and proceed with the necessary actions for the preparation of the relevant legislative framework".
