"Only Turkey can save the European Union from the impasse it has reached in its economy, defense, politics and international prestige," Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan argued, noting at the same time that Turkey's full membership in the Union can save it on the basis of mutual benefit and respect.
In statements after the Cabinet meeting, the Turkish President said that "far-right movements have become the determining factors of politics in Europe," arguing that "apart from economic factors, the failure of central European politics to correctly read the spirit of the times is one of the main reasons for this."
"It is a fact that liberal democracy, the most attractive ideology of the last century, has entered a serious crisis and the vacuum that has arisen in European democracies is being filled by far-right demagogues," he argued.
Of course, Mr. Erdogan noted, "to this we must add the West's ambivalent attitude towards the 471-day genocide in Gaza," arguing that "Western values, which have been presented as an example to the world for years, do not have a common goal of benefiting humanity."
Mr. Erdogan argued that "the developments in Syria as well as the discussions held in the context of the Ukraine war confirmed Europe's need for Turkey."
"Only Turkey can save the European Union from the impasse it has reached in its economy, defense, politics and international prestige," he said, and argued that "Turkey's full integration into the Union can save it on the basis of mutual benefit and respect."
