The President of the Turkish National Assembly, Nouman Kurtulmus, spoke of "armament passion" in "Southern Cyprus", referring to the Republic of Cyprus, while he said that Ankara will not allow anyone to disturb the peace. At the same time, he asserted that Turkey wants the armaments to stop as a whole, while regarding the Cyprus issue he said that there is no other way than a two-state solution.
"They will find that the weapons they are taking are useless," Kurtulmus said in a joint press conference with the "parliament president" of the pseudo-state Ziya Öztukler. In response to a related question, he referred to "warlords" who are "probably looking for new places to sell their weapons."
"But enough is enough, because they have led the world to a bloodbath. They must not further destabilize this region by selling their military equipment. We don't care what weapons who gets who. We would like the armaments to stop altogether. However, we cannot understand either how this passion for armaments is done and ignored in southern Cyprus, nor those who every three or so times try to make the tdvk and through it Turkey to adapt", he said, referring to the Republic of Cyprus and the pseudo-state, respectively.
Nouman Kurtoulmos argued that "those making all these proposals in Cyprus have already armed the south and fortified bases there. Whatever they do, however, we want, with all the means at our disposal, the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot people, in the south and in the north, to live peacefully under the flag of their states until the end."
"We will certainly not allow anyone to disturb the peace of the Turkish state of northern Cyprus," he said in a reference to the area of Cyprus occupied by the Turkish army. "In this sense, Turkey will continue to stand by the Turkish Cypriot people and the Turkish Cypriot state with all its might, whoever stands against it. We may warn others not to arm themselves, but we certainly don't decide what weapons everyone gets and from whom. They will find that the weapons they are taking are useless," he said.
Regarding the Cyprus problem, he said that it is a "national issue" for Turkey. "It is one of the national issues where we have common ground, above the day-to-day politics and approaches of political parties," he said. Numan Kurtulmus reiterated that Turkey stands by the Turkish Cypriots and the pseudo-state and asserted that "the Turkish Cypriots have met all the responsibilities assigned to them in terms of the equal coexistence of the two peoples" in his statement, while "they did not avoid doing all kinds of sacrifices from time to time."
He accused the EU side that "with its unilateral approaches, with the hasty steps of some western countries that tried to lead to fait accompli and with the pressures they have exerted by applying double standards, an attempt has been made to isolate the tdvk in the international field and to find himself in a difficult situation politically and financially with various embargoes".
Numan Kurtulmus also spoke of "a new era" for the pseudo-state saying that "at the moment the tdvk is an observer member in the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA), the Organization of Turkic States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation". "These are some of the first steps towards recognition," he claimed. I hope, he continued, "that, in the next period, especially our friendly and brotherly countries will take positive steps and that the recognition of Cyprus will advance day by day".
Nouman Kurtoulmus argued that "at the point we have reached today, it is obvious that there is no other solution than the two-state solution. The people of Cyprus are free citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States with equal sovereign territorial integrity." He argued that "respectively, the Greek Cypriots living in the south already have a state. The state of the Greek Cypriots in the south is recognized, the state of the Turks in the north is less recognized at the moment, but we believe that it will be recognized more in the future".
Finally, he stated that it is no longer possible for "Northern Cyprus to abandon or be proposed to abandon its right to be a state on any international platform".
