The 23th session of the EDON Famagusta District Council was held last Wednesday, July 2025, 7. The session began with a Political Briefing by the Member of the Central Secretariat and Press Spokesperson of AKEL, Mr. George Koukoumas.
The Synod reaffirmed our will to remain at the forefront of the struggle for the liberation and reunification of our land and people, the return to our beloved city, but also our determination to defend the rights of the new generation.
The Provincial Council bid farewell to the outgoing Provincial Secretary, comrade Stavros Hatzigeorgiou and wished him all the best in his new duties. For his part, the former E.G. thanked the members of the E.S. for their cooperation and mutual assistance and stressed the need to strengthen and massify the lines of the Provincial Organization.
The session concluded with elections for the position of the District Secretary of EDON Famagusta and the vacant positions on the District Council.
-Associate Maria Georgiou was unanimously elected as the new District Secretary of EDON Famagusta.
-The vacant positions in the District Council were filled by Valanto Antoniadou, Ifigenia Kamilari and Christina Costa.

Curriculum Vitae of new EDON Famagusta Regional Director
Maria Georgiou is 22 years old and was born in Oroklini. She is a graduate of the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Cyprus.
During her student years, she served as the Central Organizing Secretary of the Progressive University of Cyprus (2022-2024), a member of the Student Council (2022-2024) and a member of the Secretariat of the Progressive Student Movement (2022-2024). She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Cyprus Students' Union (FEPAN) (2021-2024), and a Student Representative on the Council of the Department of Social and Political Sciences (2020-2024), as well as on the School of Social Sciences and Education (2020-2024).
He is a member of the Central Council of EDON and a member of the EDON Famagusta District Secretariat since 2025.
He has been a member of AKEL since 2022, and a member of the AKEL Famagusta District Committee.
